Revitalising a Nordic Spirits Icon

Aalborg Akvavit has been part of Nordic drinking culture since 1846 and remains one of the strongest brands within the aquavit category. As a key brand within Pernod Ricard Nordic’s portfolio, Aalborg Akvavit held a leading market position across the region – despite operating within a category facing long-term decline and increasingly limited seasonal relevance.

The challenge was to modernise and strengthen the identity while preserving the authenticity and cultural heritage deeply associated with the brand.

Building Clarity Across the Portfolio

LOOP Associates developed a comprehensive identity and packaging framework designed to harmonise and strengthen the Aalborg Akvavit range across multiple product lines and market positions.

The work focused on:

  • clarifying the overall brand architecture
  • strengthening recognition across sub-lines
  • modernising the visual identity
  • creating greater consistency throughout the portfolio


A flexible system was developed to support the distinct roles of Classic, Popular, and Premium variants while maintaining a strong and recognisable Aalborg Akvavit identity across all touchpoints.


The objective was not only visual refinement, but also to help reposition aquavit for new occasions, audiences, and contemporary consumption patterns.

Reframing Tradition for New Generations

Beyond the core portfolio work, LOOP Associates explored how Nordic traditions and seasonal rituals could be reinterpreted through product design and storytelling.

Projects such as Aalborg Jule Akvavit introduced a more elevated and iconic packaging expression through the distinctive “Drop” bottle design – recognised with a Creative Circle Award. At the same time, Aalborg Forårs Akvavit expanded the category beyond its traditional holiday associations, helping reposition aquavit within lighter and more contemporary seasonal contexts.

Rather than abandoning tradition, the work aimed to rethink how Nordic heritage could remain culturally relevant within a changing market.

Strengthening a Historic Nordic Brand

The result was a more coherent and scalable identity system capable of supporting both portfolio complexity and long-term brand recognition across the Nordic region.

By balancing heritage with contemporary design principles, LOOP Associates helped strengthen Aalborg Akvavit’s position within a challenged category while opening new possibilities for communication, product innovation, and modern usage occasions.
