Creating Trust in a New Category

Before internet-based communication became mainstream, the founders behind Kazaa set out to make global voice communication accessible, simple, and affordable through emerging Voice over Internet Protocol technology. The concept was ambitious, unfamiliar to most people, and initially difficult to position credibly to investors and the broader market.

The challenge was to create a visual identity capable of giving the young company legitimacy, clarity, and momentum within a completely new communication category.

Translating Technology into Identity

Working from little more than a name and an early business plan, LOOP Associates developed the original Skype identity and communication framework. The process evolved from the early “sky-peer-to-peer” concept into Skype – including the now iconic bubble logo and a visual universe designed to communicate accessibility, optimism, and ease of use.

Alongside the identity itself, comprehensive brand guidelines and an integrated communication strategy were developed across both digital and physical touchpoints.

Designed for Rapid Growth

The identity system was built to support rapid international expansion while maintaining recognisability across markets and platforms. Rather than relying on short-term visual trends, the framework established a flexible and enduring structure capable of evolving alongside the technology and the company itself.

This gave Skype a clear and coherent presence during a period of rapid growth and increasing global adoption.

A Defining Symbol of Digital Communication

What began as a small startup quickly became one of the defining platforms of early internet-based communication. While the technology and market evolved over time, the original Skype identity remained widely recognisable through multiple acquisitions and platform transitions.

The Skype bubble became an internationally recognised symbol of accessible global communication – demonstrating how a strong identity system can help emerging technologies build trust, visibility, and lasting cultural relevance.
